Is garlic safe to give to pets? That all depends on how you give it. If you feed garlic to your pet the way they do in laboratory research studies by 'force administration', in medical terms its called 'gavage” - through a tube inserted into a hole made in their stomach or through a tube run down their throat, in concentrated amounts and high doses, the answer is NO IT IS NOT SAFE!
HOWEVER, If you feed it humanely and naturally, in small amounts, the way it was meant to be ‘eaten’, the answer is YES IT IS SAFE. With just a few exceptions, given in small amounts, mixed into food, garlic can be beneficial to the health of most dogs and cats.
The harm caused by garlic in laboratory research is ‘Dose Related’! The general public has to realize how important it is to learn to read and understand the ‘entire’ scientific study and not just glean a few lines of a medical ‘abstract’ of the findings. Unfortunately, this has been the cause of so much Internet hysteria amongst pet owners that it has given garlic a bad rap.
If I were to professionally research how many companion animals have been physically injured or died from receiving supplemental amounts of garlic in their food I would hard pressed to find substantial information.
On the other hand, if I were to research the research animals used in laboratory testing I would find numerous animal injuries and deaths listed under garlic studies. In most scientific trials, all of the animals (well or unwell) who go through the studies are euthanized when the research is complete. The fact I find the hardest to believe is how so many people can put their trust in science for science sake, essentially a funded experimental system that advocates poisoning, torture and murder…Especially when there are years of Empirical evidence in animals and humans validating its safe use.
